Solar-gas project to power FMG mines

A $200 million solar-gas power project to be built in Western Australia’s hostile east Pilbara region will deliver electricity to Fortescue Metals Group’s iron ore mines at a price that many industrial users in the National Electricity Market would envy.

The Australian Financial Review is reporting that’s the view of  Alinta Energy chief executive Jeff Dimery, who says the Chichester solar-gas hybrid project, which is backed by taxpayers, “draws a line in the red dust” in terms of setting a new benchmark for clean power supply for a big industrial operation.

The project involves the construction of a 60-megawatt solar panel plant at the hub and a 60-kilometre transmission line to connect it to Alinta’s gas power generator and battery plant at Newman.
