Corunna Downs project set for kick-start

Gina Rinehart looks set to make her first significant strategic move on the back of her acquisition of Atlas Iron by pushing the button on the development of a stalled iron ore project near Marble Bar.

The West Australian is reporting the mining magnate’s private company Hancock Prospecting has applied to the Environmental Protection Authority to develop the relatively small Corunna Downs project, based on five open pits using conventional drill and blast, load and haul methods.

Information on the EPA website shows Hancock expects to mine five million tonnes of iron ore a year from Corunna Downs, 33km south of Marble Bar, over an initial six-year period.
