Rapidly increasing demand for lithium iron batteries is set to boost the
Western Australian nickel industry.
BHP is considering bringing forward stage two of its proposed nickel sulfate processing plant in Kwinana south of Perth following sustained inquiries from electric vehicle battery manufacturers.
Stage one plans were announced in August for a $43 million expansion that will produce 100,000 tonnes of nickel sulfate, the stage two development will double this output. BHP is also evaluating the possibility of developing a cathode precursor plant at Kwinana.
