Australian manufacturing world leader on energy use

According to a recent International Energy Agency report Australia’s manufacturing industry is now the most energy-intensive in the world.    The report singles out Australia as the only developed country to embrace  an increase in energy consumption between 2005 and  2015.

The IEA’s global efficiency report reviewed 15 yeas of  energy effectiveness reviews and their impact from nations’ energy policies .  Australian manufacturing was ranked as the third-highest energy intensity in 2000 with a ranking of 15.3 mega joules, this figure rose 1.5% in 2015 to 15.52 mega joules and saw Australia  become the world leader.  A decrease in energy intensity during the same period,  was recorded by every other member nation that is part of the IEA.

Commenting on Australia’s achievement, Ai Group CEO Innes Willox said ” Cheap energy made this a great place to locate energy-intensive industries.  This has left much of Australian Industry facing intense pain.   Improving our energy efficiency in now an essential part of competitiveness  for more businesses than ever before.”
