MESCA MEMBER GOOD NEWS: Downer has been appointed the main contractor for the Solar River’s $450 million first stage, marking a major milestone for the project.
Work will begin in May on the project, which includes a 200MW array of 640,000 solar panels, on pastoral land near Robertstown.
Solar River Project chief executive Jason May said Downer, a Mining and Energy Services Council of Australia (MESCA) member, was one of Australia’s largest renewable energy providers and had signed an “early contractor involvement” deal.
“Downer brings cutting edge technology and construction excellence to South Australia,” Mr May said.
“(The company’s) commitment to create hundreds of local jobs during construction sealed the deal”.
The 5000ha development site is about half way between Burra and Morgan, and work will be completed in up to four stages.
About 350 jobs will be created during stage one’s two-year build, along with 45 permanent jobs including apprenticeships, traineeships and engineering and management roles.
