AGL explores pumped hydro in the Hunter

The Newcastle Herald is reporting, the proposed $300 million, 250 megawatt facility is part of AGL’s renewable energy and storage mix as it prepares to close Liddell coal-fired power station in 2022.

AGL and Muswellbrook Coal owner Idemitsu in May care working on a separate but linked proposal to use a mine void below Bells Mountain for the lower section of a pumped hydro storage power plant.

AGL General Manager for development and construction, David Johnson, said the company was investigating the feasibility of several pumped hydro project options in the Upper Hunter.
